Make Your Own Night Light Kit

Materials Included
Each kit comes with full color, easy-to-follow instruction manual with a choice of 14 pretty flowers, butterflies, and other shape tutorials to choose from, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, crystal-chemical, a beaker, a growing cup, spoon, thread, colorful gems, a shatter-proof mason jar with fairy lights and a carry handle. *You will need 2 AAA batteries and water from home.
Prep Work:
Make sure you, the adult, is handles the preparing of water. Boil water and keep it to the side. I used a goose-neck kettle which ended up being perfect for this. You'll also need to create a pipe cleaner flower from the kit. Instructions are provided or you can pop over the the pipe cleaner carnation blog from this site!
Crystal Growing
1. Cut 10” of thread using a ruler and tie a knot around the outermost edge. Your flower will need to dangle inside the large cup with out touching the sides.
2. Once the thread is secure around the shape, tie the opposite end to one of the popsicle stick. Also test how long you’ll need to wrap around the popsicle by using the cup. Does your flower hit the bottom and is too long? Wrap the thread a couple more times around the pipe cleaner! TIP: Thread the flower in two places to help it hand better.
3. Time for some chemistry! Scoop three tablespoons of borax into the cup.
4. Have the adult carefully pour 1 cup (237 mL) over the borax. You can use the measuring cup by filling it twice to 100 mL and once to the 37 mL line.
5. Stir the borax and water mixture until completely dissolved.
6. Have an adult gently immerse the flower, by holding it from the popsicle stick, in the solution while it’s still hot. Adjust as needed so that the flower does not touch the bottom or the sides of the cup.
7. Let your experiment rest in a place where it will not be disturbed and lay a tissue or paper towel over the top to keep dust away!
